When Garden on a Roll first began, we had a mission to do two things:
1. Make gardening simple
2. Increase pollinator numbers and bio-diversity within gardens around the UK.
The result of that mission was our very first creation, the Wildlife Friendly Border. This border isn’t just a collection of plants. It’s a thoughtfully designed sanctuary that balances beauty for you along with support for wildlife.
Why Choose the Wildlife Friendly Border?
Pollinator powerhouse
Every plant included has been carefully considered and selected to attract a wide range of pollinating insects – not just bees and butterflies. The likes of flies, wasps, hoverflies, and the often forgotten about and all important nighttime pollinator - moths. Together, they create a thriving ecosystem in your own back garden.
Colour and texture and sensory for all seasons
We know pollinators are drawn to vibrant displays, so this border is packed with plants chosen for their love of colour and texture. Did you know that most pollinators, including moths, are drawn to white flowers? And, it’s important to consider scent as this is another factor that will draw insects in. Luckily, all the research has been done by us for this border. The result? A living tapestry that constantly catches the eye and keeps pollinators coming back for more!
Winter interest for wildlife and you
Pollinators need shelter and food year-round, so we’ve taken winter interest into account too. Seed heads, structure, and evergreen planting not only add beauty to your garden during colder months, but also create vital habitats when pollinators need them most.
Why attract pollinators?
Pollinators are the unsung heroes of our environment. They’re responsible for helping plants reproduce, ensuring that fruits, vegetables, and flowers continue to thrive. Without them, our food systems, wildflowers, and even garden favourites would be at risk.
Most of us tend to think of bees when it comes to pollination, yet insect pollinators are a very diverse group. Honeybees are mostly kept in managed hives, and are likely responsible for pollinating between 5-15% of the UK's insect-pollinated crops. That leaves 85-95% of the UK’s insect-pollinated crops relying on wild pollinators. Many species of bee, wasp, moth, butterfly, hoverfly, fly and beetle provide an essential service in the UK, pollinating crops.
By creating a welcoming space for pollinators, you’re not just adding life and movement to your garden, you’re playing a part in protecting biodiversity across the UK.
Bring your garden to life. Support pollinators. Enjoy year-round colour.
